Vitamin C is classed as an essential vitamin, meaning our bodies can't produce it and we need to maintain a regular intake of it with our diet and supplements. It seems like Vitamin C is all the rage now with it being touted at the go-to product for fighting infection and supporting the body's natural immunity. While that is very well-known benefit of Vitamin C, here are a list of reasons why Vitamin C should be included in your daily routine.

1. Vitamin C & Zinc immunity support

Vitamin C is certainly the undisputed champion when it comes to helping to protect your body from flu and infection. But how does it work? Vitamin C, working together with Zinc, has been shown to reduce the length and severity of a cold, and may even reduce the chance of catching a cold in athletes and those exposed to cold temperatures.

Vitamin C can also help improve the absorption of iron from the diet by converting iron that is poorly absorbed, such as plant-based sources of iron, into a form that is easier to absorb by the body.

2. Reduce the risk of age-related eye diseases

Both Vitamin C and Zinc may prevent vision loss in older people by delaying the onset and progression of age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration. In a smaller study Vitamin C has also shown an effect on the reduction of cataracts.

3. Skin health and healing

This is a little known benefit of Vitamin C which is required by the body to form collagen, part of the skin’s connective tissue. Zinc on the other hand, is used to form and maintain the skin's barriers and mucous membranes. That's why in combination, they both play vital roles in the healing of wounds, such as cuts, skin ulcers and bleeding gums.

4. May help manage high blood pressure

Studies have shown that vitamin C may help lower blood pressure in both those with and without high blood pressure issues and an animal study showed that this occurs by the relaxation of blood vessels which carry blood from the heart.

5. Improves age-related memory problems

Poor vitamin C levels in the body have been associated with an increased risk of memory and thinking disorders such as dementia, while a high intake of vitamin C from foods and supplements has been shown to have a protective effect. This could be attributed to the antioxidant power of Vitamin C which combats oxidative stress and inflammation experienced by the brain, spine, and nerves.

Vitamin C supplements in combination with Zinc have been shown in many studies to support the body's natural immunity, boost collagen and skin cell production as well as help manage chronic heart and memory diseases.
